• Congressional activity is percolating to include new federal recognition of Inidian tribes, including that Lumbee Indian tribe, that have diverted the regular federal recognition process, which could include result in the expansion of casino and gambling.

• Recognition would provide sovereign powers - the power to tax, police, and incarcerate, and would guarantee billions of taxpayer dollars with no expiration date. Even worse, this process "jumps the line" and does not follow the standard, fair process for every federal tribal recognition which sets a dangerous precedent for others to fall in line.

• As a result, we could see gambling spread into communities across America, bring addiction, broken families, and moral decay.

• The legislation rewards bad actors. The blatant manipulation of numbers demonstrate a huge con game against taxpayers and underpins all that is wrong with traditional Washington, with the focus being power and money, not what is best for constituents and communities.

• Attaching or advancing legislation through the NDAA may violate regulations that restrict non defense related provision from being included, and would use the NDAA to push controversial social and economic issues that do not belong in a defense authorization bill.

• We have a responsibility to prevent brokenness and addiction, and to protect our communities which cannot afford to carry this burden. This effort is about integrity, stewardship, and protecting our people from harm.

• We should respectfully contact our United States Senators and ask them to oppose any federal efforts to expand gambling operations, and efforts to federal recognized Indian tribes - like Lumbee - to ensure that the NDAA remains focused on defense, not advancing casino gambling.
